Meet the Founder

Prof. Norman Andrew Gates

Andy Gates is the owner and head instructor at Eagle Mountain Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, LLC. He is a Black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo under Professor Paulo Fernando and Professor Walter Dean, with lineage to Carlson Gracie Sr., Octavio de Alameida Jr., and Shigueto Yamasaki. Mr. Gates has been active in the Law Enforcement community for over 15 years.

  • With 30 years of service in the U.S. Army, Adam continues to serve while pursuing his lifelong passion for studying combatives. Throughout his military career, he trained in the Modern Army Combatives Program (MACP) through Level III and has spent over two decades studying various martial arts. His journey reflects a commitment to continuous learning, having trained with skilled practitioners and instructors across the country and around the world. This diverse experience allows him to blend practical combatives with technical depth. Adam is also proud to serve as an ambassador for the We Defy Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting disabled combat veterans through Jiu-Jitsu. Through this work, he helps connect veterans with the therapeutic and empowering benefits of training, fostering a sense of community, resilience, and renewed purpose. He believes the mat provides a powerful environment for healing, growth, and rebuilding confidence after service. Driven by a passion for coaching and mentorship, Adam is committed to helping others develop both on and off the mat. Whether working with veterans or younger students, he emphasizes the values of humility, discipline, perseverance, and respect.
